Future of virtuality in-the-making: Reflections from Stanford University

Image
I want to share a well written post titled, ' Future of virtuality in-the-making: Reflections from Stanford University' by Ates Gursimsek for the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's Blog. Ates is a PhD researcher at Roskilde University, friend, and visiting scholar at Stanford University's H-STAR Institute who studies collaborative design and innovation in virtual worlds. Ates states, "my observations have introduced me the rising culture of technological and social innovation through collaboration and co-creation in Silicon Valley (SV), as well as research and development studies on these emerging Web technologies, focusing on social sciences, humanities and educational studies, at Stanford University." Check it out . Here are videos covering a couple things he worked on and experienced while visiting Silicon Valley. Tesekkur ederim for all the great info Ates. I look forward to seeing where your research takes us!

Virtual Medical Environments Workshop

Image
Monday was the Virtual Medical Environments Workshop by Media X at Stanford University. This event was really intriguing to me as no industry has used 3D for visualization as long as the medical industry has. Parvati Dev with Innovation in Learning Inc and Media X at Stanford University lead the workshop that looked to, " bring together selected industry and academia representatives with experience in developing and disseminating virtual medical environments. Existing use cases will be presented and discussion will focus on opportunities and barriers. The goal will be to generate a Roadmap that presents some possible paths from the trough of disillusionment to a plateau of productivity." The workshop had over a dozen presentations of work being done in the medical field with web3D technologies. I thoroughly enjoyed the presentations from UBC students AJung Moon's ' Nonverbal human-robot interaction and opportunities for cognitive rehabilitation in virtual...

3D Web outreach, working together to bring the future closer

Image
Wednesday March 4 th was the Web3D Consortium's 2009 Outreach/Member meeting at NASA Ames research facility. The focus of the event was to reach out to those industries that use web3D, educate, and continue dialogue for how the 3D web open standard X3D and the Web3D Consortium can assist with some of the issues they are having and collaborate to advance the growth of these domains. A quick recap, web3D is any form of real-time interactive 3D. This includes virtual worlds, mirror worlds, augmented reality, simulation, web3D/mixed reality applications, and more. The Outreach event had a good turnout with those from both the web3D space, the virtual worlds industry, mirror worlds, and several web3D students. Guest Speaker Jay Cee Straley from Sprint, presented us his insight on Web3D technology and standards for the mobile platform. He demonstrated some very cool applications of web3D and augmented reality for mobile devices. Don Brutzman ( NPS ) and I ran the X3D plugfest tha...

Stanford's Open Source unConference '08

Image
Some old news here as back to back holidays and projects have sidetracked me from posting this earlier. On Friday November 14, 2008 Stanford Open Source Lab had its first Open Source unConference . Hosted by Stanford's Metaverse man Henrik Bennetsen, it was an intimate turnout of those supporting open source tools and technologies. Pictures from WiseMarco The event grid had great topics and speakers for all the sessions. There were several sessions on Drupal (the open source content management platform) , I caught Vladimir Bacvanski's engaging session on Javascript and the Dojo Toolkit , and finished off with Gene Leybzon's session explaining and showcasing some cool applications he developed for Google's Android open free mobile platform. Gene Presentation For Android Only natural to have a session on the open standard for the 3D Web/Metaverse and cover its open source players. Thanks to Web3D Consortium Board member Dr. Michael Aratow for also participati...

Stanford's Metaverse Meetups

Image
Even though these events are from last year, they are great insight by two forward thinkers as to where the web is headed. MM1 -Mike Liebhold, a Senior Researcher at the Institute for the Future , focusing on the mobile and abundant computation, immersive media and geospatial web foundations for context-aware and ubiquitous computing. MM2 - Jamais Cascio is currently a Research Affiliate at the Institute for the Future . He writes about the intersection of emerging technologies, environmental dilemmas, and cultural transformation, specializing in the design and creation of plausible scenarios of the future. His work focuses on the importance of long-term, systemic thinking, emphasizing the power of openness, transparency and flexibility as catalysts for building a more resilient society. A TED 2006 conference speaker and co-founder of Worldchanging.com Thanks to Henrik Bennetsen with Stanford for organizing these events.
